Times have changed greatly and it is hard for a Christian woman to discern the truth in a culture that tends to blur the lines. I remember as a young Christian mom naively thinking all books in my local Christian bookstore were all trustworthy from faithful sources and saddened when I learned that false teachers were also mixed in with the bunch.
I liked these posts I came across not too long ago which reminded me of how I felt as a young Christian having to sort out what would be good influences and what I would need to be careful about.

I don't agree with everything she says here ( perhaps the painting of young moms with a broad brush but maybe that has been her personal experience) but she does hit on some very good points. As a mother with an adult child, and of course my other seven, I am encouraged by women who have gone the path of raising young adults before me as this post definitely helps younger mothers to understand older women.

I couldn't agree more! We must be discerning! There are so many false teachers out there! But, praise God, there are good, God led teachers there too :) We must stand up and teach the younger ones in faith, all of what God's Word says. That God created us with a purpose and we glorify Him when we live according to His will for our lives :)
To learn to discern, to muddle through the misinterpretations and cultural warping of His Word is needed. That is why those who are strong, those who are wiser and have walked that path before them need mentoring :) Thankfully, there are a lot of wonderful sites out there now doing just that! And yours is one! Thank you for your blog :O I love to read from your heart ;)

It IS hard work to read and pray and learn from the Scriptures, and it is not instant.
Our society thrives on instant gratification, instant knowledge and the Enemy knows that.
There is no shortcut to get discernment- the only way is to walk with the Lord and TEST EVERYTHING.
People, especially women, do not want to invest that time...they want someone, especially "Christian experts" to tell them so they can fit even more into their busy lives. In the long run, it causes leanness of soul.
I didn't get saved until I was 27. At first I too naively believed all Christian authors were equally good. Then one day after I had been saved about 2 years, I read a promotional newsletter from a popular women's author that she had written a new book to "teach us to pray". The Holy Spirit showed me that the Lord Jesus had already taught us that in His Word, and that for thousands of years, the Holy Bible was "enough"...there were no seminars, teaching tapes, how-to books. This is not to say that sometimes we can't read a good, scriptural book to further edify us, but the danger is when we rely on these authors....no one is infallible.
There are many good, solid Christian books out there, but even more false teachers.
Praise the Lord that He gives us His Word:

Thanks for commenting. I believe that it is so easy to be led astray and that we must be grounded in the Word at all times. Satan is good at twisting scriptures and if we don't know it well enough we will become like Eve in the garden of Eden.

Yes, when we rely on outside material more than the Bible is sign that we need to get back to His Word. We have so much available to us today, sometimes we just need to block out all the other voices streaming in and purposefully make our quiet time with God a priority.

Yes, I absolutely struggle with discernment. I think the reason I do is because I don't know it all. I'm in the word of God every single day, but every day presents new opportunities and challenges for me to react to. I can only trust that through heartfelt prayer, the Holy Spirit will work within me, guiding me to the path He wants me to take. My quiet time with God is a major priority. I'm up at 5:30 every morning so I can get a good hour of time sitting in His presence before the family is up and moving about. But in the busyness of the day, my mind isn't always quick to think about the right scripture for my circumstances. Often times, my first reaction is to try to figure it out on my own. When that doesn't work (it rarely does) then I'm reminded that perhaps I need to seek the counsel of the One who has been lighting the path for me all along...if only I'd stop and seek.
I agree whole-heartily that there must be more women out there that learn to discern truth. We must move beyond Joyce Myers (discernment alert!) We are the one's teaching our children during homeschooling so who needs it more than us? I was taught Biblical discernment from my husband who is very wise to His truth. A good discernment resource is Pirate Christian Radio. Women who are hungry for truth and wisdom, it is a calling from God. You haven't arrived until the Mormons put your house on the list of "do not knock." :) God Bless you and share His wisdom ABUNDANTLY with you all!
This is very true for women during the years that they are unmarried. The world pushes many temptations and ideologies towards working unmarried women. Women with families need the most guidance on how to live as Godly women and serve God.
