"I Am Woman Hear Me Roar"--The Feminist's Battlecry


Not long ago I taught a woman's Bible study on the topic of Deception and Discernment and wanted to share a bit of that with you:

One of the most infamous and well-known quotes of the century for woman:

"I am woman, hear me roar!"

The world has colorfully painted a picture of what women should look like in today's world. Images are splashed upon the trendy magazines with pictures of women in suits, holding briefcases in heels, dropping off their wee ones to daycare before the stop off at Starbucks for their daily hit of java. Celebrity magazines have their starlets portrayed as loud, scantily clad seductresses with instructional articles encouraging us how to dress and be like them--and who can ignore the mommy magazines that are shouting from the rooftops about how we can have it all.

But I am here to share with you that this is not true. It is lies. It is deception. It has taken me a life time to unlearn these very messages that have bombarded me as women since day one. Happiness and true success is not found in those pursuits, but is found in Christ alone. Instead of living up to this mentality of the "I am woman, hear me roar" generation,  the Christian woman needs to live exactly the opposite. In fact, what she needs to be living out is this:

"I am the Lords, and I come in meekness to exalt Him."

We cannot allow television to set the standard for us. Nor media, or culture or the feminist movement. Have you thought about what is making you discontent lately? There is probably a lie lurking deep inside somewhere. A lie we learned from the world  that we are believing and blindly and tearing down our precious homes in the process.

But we need to be sober because the days are evil. We are called to be sober-minded in Titus 2. We are to build up our homes and we can do that with proper, right thinking. Phillipians 4:8 reminds us...

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things."

Women are more easily deceived, so we must be on our guard. The first woman targeted in the Bible was Eve and that is still happening today. We are Eve's daughters, but we must not allow Satan to continue his lies with this generation, because we have learned our lesson.

There are many broken homes and relationships left in the aftermath of those lies today,
but with God we can restore the ruins and build on it the firm foundation
that is not rooted in false worldly philosophies
but from TRUTH found through Jesus Christ alone.

I actually titled my blog "I am woman, but you will never hear me roar", originally. I later decided that didn't fit, but this topic is always on my heart. I feel we can never truly bring glory to the Father and honor to our husbands, if we overshadow them at every turn. Thank you for writing this!

I am the only woman in my family who wants to stay home with my children and take care of my home and help my husband. My husband is overjoyed that I don't want to work and he works over time at his job so I can be home. I feel very blessed. I homeschool as well.

But everyone else in my family thinks I am selfish because I won't put the kids in school or day care and get a job. They don't think I'm helping my husband financially and that hurts. Some of them think that my staying at home is lazy, and they make comments about how it must be nice to get to stay home and do nothing! When it's furthest from the truth.

I hope that someday they will see my differently. I guess I am a little selfish for wanting to be home.

I always disliked that quote so much. I just found it unladylike...LOL! But, I agree with you, we need to remember where we get our strength. Sometimes I think, we as women, are so easily deceived because we want to please so much, our husbands, children, parents even. The pressure to be more than what God intended for us is a message we are constantly hearing.

Thank -you so much for this post.I can think of nothing more important than taking care of my home and family and being a help-meet for my husband.I have done so for over 34 years. The Bible tells us our home and our family are our responsibility.Raising our children for Him is the most important job we can do in life.

Thank you so much. I've been thinking on this topic so much lately, as I have a younger sister whose life I can clearly see being ruined by these lies. I've been trying to find articles and words of wisdom on this topic, and yours are always the ones that speak to me. I pray one day my sister will open her eyes enough to let some truth speak to her as well. :)

I think I miss the point of the title but I have a query regarding 'tv'...

As a brand new believer (8yrs ago) the Lord spoke to my heart about not watching tv. And I stopped. When I moved out of home I was given one with friends who set it up and I had tv which never got turned on unless someone else did it. But then when DH & I moved to a new town we were given 4 tvs in a year. Shocking and ridiculus! We gave them away in the end. I struggle to watch movies bcos of MY conviction & def don't have a tv anymore praise the Lord.
But I wonder and I am wondering... How many OTHER people have the same conviction? With NO tv in their homes... & why... I often feel like I a the only one :S

This comment is for Amy. I have also gradually weaned myself from TV and movies over the past 2 years (still working on giving up YouTube videos!) It is wonderful from a spiritual standpoint. I get antsy if someone invites me to a movie and it's unbearable to sit through a TV show. Friends think I'm off my rocker :) But it's not done out of legalism, it's because the Lord has given me wonderful new desires!

I too am teaching the Bible study "Girls Gone Wise In A World Gone Wild" by Mary Kassian to a group of high school girls. It's so sad how these girls have been saturated with everything but...how to be a Godly Woman. I am praying that they will realize the importance of motherhood, homemaking and being a wife that enjoys taking care of her husband. I plan on taking them on a weekend Bible Study retreat to introduce them to the world of cooking, cleaning and homemaking and how that is all incorporated into being a "Godly Woman."

We haven't had a tv for 12 years. Our kids are very different from their cousins and friends, but I don't regret it at all. I see my nieces and nephews involved in a lot of very worldly things thru the week and bringing these things into the church on Sunday. I love them, but I don't like the influence they are beginning to have on my kids. We will probably have to change churches or start home churching again. I wish we could find some like minded Christian families without televisions to socialize with.
