How to Have Laughter & Joy in the Christian Home

Is your home a happy home?

Is there laughter throughout the day?

Or is it dark and gloomy?

Today we are covering Chapter 7 of the book The Most Important Place on Earth: What a Christian Home Looks Like and How to Build One. If you would like to join us, there is still time and you can get your book HERE.

Do you ever get so caught up with the busyness of life that you just forget to have fun and laugh? This is important for our homes because we want it to be a place of joy, not gloom and doom. It has been said that laughter is the best medicine of all and all the statistics show that it even improves our health!

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS ABOUT IT

A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance. But by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.  ~Proverbs 15:13

A cheerful look brings joy to the heart; good news makes for good health. ~Proverbs 15:30

A cheerful heart is good medicine. ~Proverbs 17:22

When we seek to have implement laughter and joy in our home, it doesn't mean going out and buying expensive toys or gadgets. Mr. Wolgemuth (the author) encourages us to seek out "homemade" laughter such as:

  • playing a game of hide-and-seek
  • playing tickle monster
  • reading joke books and sharing them over dinner
  • watching funny movies
  • making fun home videos with teens
  • romping on the floor with our children

So be sure to make it a part of your home!

"Unless you were born with an extra funny bone, creating laughter in your home is going to have to be of a plan."

LAUGH AT YOURSELF AND LIGHTEN UP

It is okay to laugh at yourself and not take things so seriously. I can sometimes be a serious person so I am glad that the Lord brought me my husband who is such a blessing in this area. He loves having fun and jokes around all the time. In fact, one of the things that I loved about him when we dated is that he could make me laugh and he still does today--trust me, that is no easy feat either! I am grateful that God brought him into our lives because he brings a lot of the joy and happiness in our home just naturally when he walks through the door. This is a gift!

WHAT YOU WANT TO AVOID

  • TEASING

  • SCORNFUL LAUGHING

  • SARCASTIC HUMOR & CYNICISM

"Teasing - even if it's not intended to hurt--has the power to wound and close a child's spirit"

These types of "humor" can be hurtful, feel like an attack, or be like a poison to a Christian home so be sure to draw the line and keep it fun for all!

What ways do you try to bring laughter into your home?
