27 Bible Verses on How to Be Humble

Do you struggle with pride?

There are areas in a Christian's life where pride might try to creep in. It is wise to read the Bible verses and refresh ourselves on how to be humble.

Our pastor recently said this about temptation of sin-- "Always assume weakness." We truly need to guard ourselves from the sin of pride for there are many stories of the Bible we can learn from to avoid it.

One of the ways to keep from being prideful is giving credit where it is due. For example,  when someone compliments you on something that you have done, you can tell them that it is because God helped you and that He is kind. Look for opportunities to do this so we can exalt Him and not ourselves. I missed the chance to do this the other day and I want to get back to doing it!

Whenever I see humility it truly stands out as a light in the darkness. Think of the most humble person you know and what made them come to mind. Pray to God to help you to become more humble. God is working on this in my life (I am a work in progress!) and I am so grateful for Him for doing so.

Here are some Bible verses on humility to encourage you:

James 4:6

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

Proverbs 22:4

The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life.

1 Peter 5:5

Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Colossians 3:12

Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience...

Luke 14:11

For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Philippians 2:3-11

Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. ...

Proverbs 11:2

When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.

Ephesians 4:2

With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love...

The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.

If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
