The Power of Words in a Christian Home

"For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well.  Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.
How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!"
~James 3:2-5

Today we are covering Chapter 5 of the book The Most Important Place on Earth: What a Christian Home Looks Like and How to Build One. If you would like to join us, there is still time and you can get your book HERE.

Words.

Our words.

They have the power of life and death.

Yet sometimes we can be so careless with them and hurt the ones we love.

"Words are never blanks. They're actual bullets, and their impact is absolute. Every time."

They can build up, or at their very worst --tear down.

"Mouths are loaded guns, and the words they speak can be lethal."

But in a Christian home, this should not be so.

"When words are spoken, we want the truth. When precision plays second fiddle to expedience or convenience or silly outbursts, you and I are the losers."

"Your home--your Christian home--must be different from this, It must be a place of true words. Accurate words. Your home has to be a place where people treat words as valuable and precious..and they must speak them precisely."

Our families are precious so we need to be careful not to mimic the world around us. It is so easy to replace respect with disrespect. Or encouraging words with hurtful words.

The way that we handle our words needs to be handled with the utmost care.

"Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.

~Proverbs 16:24

Seek God today and ask Him where you can improve in this. It might be with your husband, or children, or extended family member but remember to be proactive and speak life into each person's life that you talk with!

A Prayer:

Dear God, please help me to control my tongue. Help me speak only words that bring You glory and build up those around me. Please forgive me when I don't and help me to be humble and apologize to those that I have hurt. Thank you for growing me in this area and continually showing me what needs to be changed in my life. Help all my actions to reflect You and Your love so that I can draw others closer to You. In Jesus's name I pray this, Amen.
