Simple Living

Everywhere we turn we see messages aimed at living a more simple life. There are ads selling new products, home magazines that boast simple living decor and homeschooling curriculum with an emphasis on making life simpler for mom.

While all these things are good---I want to offer you the BEST.

Here is my formula for simple living:

1. Ignore all the books, mags and ads that convince me I need to buy them in order to find out their secrets.

2. Focus my life, my mind and my heart on Christ.

3. Drown out all the voices that dictate what you and the children are "supposed to be doing"- (everyone seems to have a plan for our lives, don't they?), take your eyes off  what your friends/neighbors are doing by not comparing and then reexamine false standards or high expectations you have made for yourself and your loved ones.

4. Pray and ask God to give me focus, ability and wisdom to prioritize my husband, children and home. Ask hubby for advice that He has to offer.

5. Expect for Him to answer in a powerful way and then....

6. Obey and listen to Him!

See how simple that was? Now we are on the road to simple living according to Jesus and not according to the world. The world can leave us confused, discontent, depressed and unsure of ourselves. But the Lord's ways are straight paths and lead to wisdom and righteousness.

Have a blessed day as you seek to live a simple life serving the Lord Jesus in your homes!

Excellent post! The thing I love about Jesus is that He does make everything simpler for us. When we make things "Jesus +" it complicates things and we end up more stressed and unfocused in the long run.

We we just let go of what others say and just focus on the Lord, as you mentioned, our thoughts become clearer and our focus gets back to where it needs to be.

It is a great reminder of keeping our eyes on Jesus, who is the author and perfecter of our faith.

God bless!

Focus on Christ - doesn't get much more simple than that! :)

makes me think of the song...

"Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace"

You are correct. Simple living is not found in adding more material things to our lives, but on learning to be content with what we have, and by focusing our lives on Christ and our families.

Thank you for this beautiful reminder.

Thank you! That was a nice post, but ohhh, number 3 is a toughie. :) Everyone has an opinion and sometimes we spend so much time listening to what everyone else is telling us, that we don't always hear what our spirit wants and needs. I've always been a people pleaser, but I am learning to say what I need to, and do what feels right for me and my family without focusing on what everyone else will think.

Oh so true. It baffles me when folks complain about being overstressed, overburdened, and overextended. Only one thing in neccessary! Build your life around Him and the rest will fall into place.

It's so easy for us Christians to get sucked into "Babolyonian" thinking. We have to fight it tooth and nail. You just posted the formula to do just that. Great post!

Thank you so much! I have been searching for "the simple life" for a while, and have read oodles of books, blogs, articles, etc. etc. etc. about simplifying, from Christian and secular viewpoints. This is the first time I have read something that really gave me hope!
