I do try to give a little money to these people, although I usually don't have cash on me. I've made "treat bags". I carry these in my car. I take quart size Ziploc baggies and fill them with pkgs of peanut butter crackers, cheeze crackers, boxed raisins, etc. I hand these out to the homeless that I see.
That was a very touching video. The guy in the car was richer than me. He actually had change. I normally don't even have that.
I have always battled with what to do in this kind of situation. Do I pull over and just talk to the man? Do I buy the man a cup of coffee (if I have the money)? Do I invite him over for dinner or lunch one day? I am always scared that the person is a mad man and will go nutso on my family in my house or bring his friends to rob our house! I guess my dad always instilled this fear into me. He is the same way.
I LOVE that idea, I went shopping and enlisted the children to take on this new ministry! We already have bags ready in our car for when we travel (which we do quite a bit!) We also enclosed a tract (my boys are really into tracts right now). We can't wait to actually share these bags with someone....
I have given before, but honestly don't anymore. One example that was the "last straw" so to speak was a time I bought food, a lunch, and gave it to a man, I drove off and he just tossed it on the ground and kept standing there with his sign that said, "Hungry, please help!" I do know that there are usually organizations, churches, etc. that help those who truly need help. I have given food to organizations that serve meals to the homeless and the homeless are so appreciative. I think we have to be careful that we are not enabling someone to continue in a lifestyle that they may have brought on themselves and what they are now going through is the consequences they must go through that will hopefully break them to a point where they turn to God. Many blessings...
Mommy Lynda,
I agree, I probably wouldn't invite them over as your first priority is protecting your family first. How about trying Tracy's idea?
