Dear Christmas Mothers Book Review & Giveaway!

I recently had a chance to read the book Dear Christmas Mothers by Connie Hultquist.  It is a sweet book by a dear mother of six and grandmother of ten who wrote a collection of seventeen letters on life and home during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season.

Her book opens with "An Old Time Christmas" as she described her excitement for Christmas and preparing early in October to get each child something special,  even though they didn't have much money.

I am sure that so many of us can relate to her--we want to make the holidays special but sometimes the budget is tight.

But Connie doesn't just throw her hands up in the air and give up, she is determined to work hard and make a memorable and beautiful old fashioned Christmas for her family now matter what.  Not buying the biggest and grandest gifts, but by all the small special things that she does for them that most would take for granted. The things that we often overlook or sometimes we think might not matter, when really all along that is what memories are made of.

There were also a few stories about how to get through the tough times. Instead of complaining,  she stayed positive, focused on the Lord, and then put her hand to working hard to finish all the things that needed to get done. Her example in this alone would encourage many women out there!

I also liked how she shared about "old time families" who made due with very little. She also encourages mothers reading her book to do the same, to keep things simple, and to do what it takes to make the holidays special any way that they can.

There was one particular a story about how back in the old days people would have friends over and bring food, over along with their fiddles, roll up the carpet, and start dancing, making their own entertainment. It reminded me a bit of Little House on the Prairie when Paw would break out his fiddle and Maw and the rest of his family would excitedly join him and dance along.

Also, all throughout the book she also includes her old fashioned family recipes and a few to try at the end too.

I think that many mothers today, caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season, would really appreciate reading a book like this. It is a good reminder to slow down and remember what is important while at the same time being spurred on by perseverance and faith
