A Woman Who is Careful with Her Words

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

In the age where voices are bombarding us from every side all the time we need to take caution as women who want to follow in the ways of a wisdom.

The Lord has given us everything that we need to know how to conduct our lives and our mouths are no exception.

A tongue has the power of life and death. What we say can influence others profoundly and even the tone we say it in can make all the difference. As women who seek to glorify God we understand the power that we hold and how we can use this for good and not harm.

"Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord, keep watch over the door of my lips." Psalm 141:3

When we set a guard over our mouths and not speaking impulsively, we are representing Christ in an honoring way.

"The lips of the wise spread knowledge, not so the hearts of fools."

We should be committed to spreading knowledge (His knowledge) and wisdom and not foolishness. We need to be purposeful knowing that we are a witness and ambassador of Christ where ever we go and to everyone we speak.

"The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. " Luke 6:45

What is in your heart will eventually come out of your mouth. I have seen in it my own life and with my children too. That is why it is so important to guard your heart and take every thought captive to Christ.

"The heart of the righteous weighs its answers, but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil."

Taking time and thought to answer carefully seems like a lost art these days with social media and being able to respond with a quick and witty answer within seconds. But for Christian women we need to think twice and maybe even then some. Don't let your emotions rule but think about what you are saying. Does it glorify God?

"The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit."

This verse above is so important in relationships. If you are a parent you know how your tongue can heal or crush within a second of leaving your mouth. Train yourselves to speak positively and not negatively to bring peace and love to situations and not stir up strife or belittle.

"A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."

We were taught to speak our minds at an early age but God wants us to think before we speak and also be gentle. We don't always have to give people a "piece of our mind" or "vent" every emotion and feeling to the world. We need to have discernment and how to speak and to do it right.

This doesn't mean we can't share our feelings---we just need to do it wisely and biblically!

"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs that it may benefit those who listen.  -Ephesians 5:29

What a great measuring stick. Is what we saying edifying or beneficial? As Christians we can do a great deal of harm or damage to the Gospel as people witness our words. Lord, help us to be faithful in this area and keep a guard over our mouths!

And a final note: I know that at times we  ALL fail quite easily when it comes to taming our tongues-- but we CAN begin to have victory in this area as we seek forgiveness from Christ, take steps to grow in our speech, and control how we communicate with others.

Pray and ask God for help while you study His Word on the matter. And don't give up knowing that even baby steps lead to success, just take it day by day. Or for some of us, even minute by minute. God will help you as needed.

  2. These are good reminders.... I have found that I get antsy when dealing with apologetics....or moral problems in people.... I hope my tongue can lead them to christ....rather than chase them away from his love..

  3. "This doesn't mean we can't share our feelings---we just need to do it wisely and biblically!"

This is something I have tried to explain to others when defending my positions on Biblical womanhood. I don't think anyone would accuse me of being shy or un-opinionated, but I work very hard to make sure that I share opinions and thoughts in a way that represents the Gospel to whoever I am speaking to.

This is an excellent post. Thanks for sharing!

  5. Great advise. I wish that there was a verse attached to every saying, though. Are they all from the Bible, or quotes from various people throughout the years?

  8. This has been on my heart lately. We have 6 children from gradeschool to adults, and thanks be to God they are all faithful and a great blessing to us. Recently, at church women have come up to me to comment on how wonderful our children are and point out something that stands out to them such as their modesty in dress or reverence, or kindness. Then they tell me how their children or grandchildren saddly are not and do such and such thing, and have lost their faith. I don't say anything because I don't want to sound braggy about how we raised our children. I don't know how to respond. How can I respond with love and kindness?
