How to Biblically Deal with Dysfunctional Parents

Have you been hurt by a parent?

Is your relationship with them unhealthy or toxic?

Has it made you confused and angry?

Perhaps you need healing.

I know that many of you have struggled with this situation and want to know how to go about handling it in a biblical way.

Here are some helpful points to keep in mind:

1. Understand that they are a sinner.

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of the Lord."

2. Forgive them.

"Forgive one another as I have forgiven you."

"Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?" Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven."

3. Pray for them.

"...and pray for one another, that you may be healed."

4. Get biblical counseling, talk to your pastor, or get Christian support as needed.

"Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future. Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand."

They can help give you action steps towards healing!

5. Honor your mother and father.

"Honor your father and your mother, that your days may belong in the land that the Lord your God is giving you."

Keep in mind this may look different for each family and situation.

A few ways you might be able to honor them would be still caring for them, forgiving them, praying for them, showing them grace and mercy, respecting them, not slandering them, etc.

We know that all circumstances are different so be sure to pray, look to God's Word, and get help as needed!

We also shared this question on our Facebook page that you can read HERE.

We highly encourage you to read our Titus 2 post on What Does Bible Say About Forgiveness:
