Titus 2 Time: What the Bible Says About Good Works

We have started doing some new Bible studies here so that we can look closely at the Word and think about it through the week. I am going to share some that I have done at home with the kids that I already have on hand. They will be simple, one post, and to the point! If we want to be wise women who fear the Lord we have to know His Word and study it.

Today I wanted to talk about good works. The Bible teaches that good works go hand in hand with our faith. That we will do good works because it is an outpouring of our faith. (Let that not be confused with good works earning salvation. That is a free gift from the Lord and cannot be earned.)

He truly has an amazing purpose for our lives!

I love what the art painting below depicts, Christ coming down from heaven to save us. He suffered for us, He bled for us, and gave His life for us. He did this for me and He did this for YOU! I truly believe we need to have that same heart for others and when we bless others it brings glory to Him.

(You can find this painting HERE.)

So I am sharing a few important Bible verses to look at and examine closely. Take time to read them, study them, write them down if possible, and memorize them. His Word is a treasure to be hidden in our hearts.

Matthew 5:16

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Ephesians 2:10

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

James 2:14-17

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

Ephesians 2:8-9

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

James 2:26

For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

Colossians 3:23-24

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.

Hebrews 13:16

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

James 2:18

But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

John 6:28-29

Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”

Galatians 6:9

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

1 Timothy 6:17-19

As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.

James 4:17

So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

Titus 2:14

Who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.

1 Corinthians 16:14

Let all that you do be done in love.

Matthew 7:21-23

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

Romans 2:6-10

He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek.

Titus 1:16

They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.

Proverbs 3:27-28

Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it. Do not say to your neighbor, “Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give it”—when you have it with you.

2 Corinthians 5:10

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

Hebrews 6:10

For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do.

2 Timothy 3:17

That the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

John 14:15

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

Hebrews 10:24

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works...

ACTION STEPS

Ladies, as we seek to do good works here are a few steps for you:

1. Pray - Ask God to show you who might bless. Oftentimes opportunities are right in front of us. Sometimes if you don't know where to look you could go to your church and ask around. Keep your eyes peeled for opportunities.

2. Look Around - at your neighbors, friends, and family. Is anyone there in need? Do they need help? Are they sick? Could they use prayer or a meal? A listening ear?  Prayer?

3. Ask -yourself how you are spending your time.  Is it wasteful? How could you spend it better as you read the passages above?

PRAYER

Dear Lord, please help us to open our eyes around us to see how we can bless others. Help us not to turn a blind eye to what we could do. Let us look for every opportunity to use our hands and resources for the glory of God, to spread the Gospel, and advance His Kingdom and not to bring glory to ourselves. Thank you for all you have done for us and all that you are going to do.  We pray this in the name of Jesus our Mighty Savior.

And finally, dear friend, do you know the Lord and if you are going to heaven? Please read this to be sure.

If you need help learning God's Word be sure to find a good Bible.

We'd also love for you to join our Titus 2 group!

Help me not to murmur in my tent
Help me not to foolishly blame God
Help me not to ask why
Help me to walk by faith and not by sight
