Taking Time to Fast & Pray

Every year our church takes time to fast and prayer. They do it mainly once a year and usually in January when the new year begins.

Some of the reasons they fast are:

  • it is biblical
  • it is expected
  • they want to listen to what God wants from them as individuals and as a church.

God has done amazing things while they fasted and prayed and there have been many breakthroughs for people as well.

"...the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them" then they will fast." Matt 9:1

There are several different kinds of fasts that you can do such as:

  • Water fast (drinking only water)
  • Juice fast (drink juices from fruits and vegetables(
  • Daniel fast (mainly vegetables and fruits)
  • Media fast - abstaining from tv, news, movies, music, radio, social media, video games

The time used while fasting instead of eating can now be filled with prayer. Click here to print out our FREE January prayer calendar and pray along with us!

If your children want to fast along with you, they can do sugar, pop, candies, desserts, phones, video games, online time, etc. Here is a nice little calendar for them here.

For additional guidance, this website is helpful for additional encouraging information on fasting as well.

If you decide to do a juice fast you will need a good juicer. We recommend a Breville juicer which has served our family faithfully over the years:

(we use this one)

My husband has really gotten into it in the past. He has done 30 day fasts and even 60 day fasts and even wrote an ebook about his experience and this juicer is the one that he swears by.  It has a strong motor and will last a long time.

Remember, if you have a preexisting medical condition to talk to your doctor first!

I pray that the Lord will richly bless your fasting and prayer time!

Do you do any fasting in the new year?

We'd love to hear about it--please share about it in the comments!
