It Is Your Business

"You cannot control your children, you say.
Then the Lord have mercy on you!
It is your business to do it,
and you must do it,
or else you will soon find they will control you.
No one knows what judgment
will come from God
upon those who allow
sin in children
to go
unrebuked."

~ C.H. Spurgeon

Simple Living

Everywhere we turn we see messages aimed at living a more simple life. There are ads selling new products, home magazines that boast simple living decor and homeschooling curriculum with an emphasis on making life simpler for mom.

While all these things are good---I want to offer you the BEST.

Here is my formula for simple living:

1. Ignore all the books, mags and ads that convince me I need to buy them in order to find out their secrets.

2. Focus my life, my mind and my heart on Christ.

3. Drown out all the voices that dictate what you and the children are "supposed to be doing"- (everyone seems to have a plan for our lives, don't they?), take your eyes off  what your friends/neighbors are doing by not comparing and then reexamine false standards or high expectations you have made for yourself and your loved ones.

4. Pray and ask God to give me focus, ability and wisdom to prioritize my husband, children and home. Ask hubby for advice that He has to offer.

5. Expect for Him to answer in a powerful way and then....

6. Obey and listen to Him!

See how simple that was? Now we are on the road to simple living according to Jesus and not according to the world. The world can leave us confused, discontent, depressed and unsure of ourselves. But the Lord's ways are straight paths and lead to wisdom and righteousness.

Have a blessed day as you seek to live a simple life serving the Lord Jesus in your homes!

Beautiful Garlands

Sometime last year I was visiting The Homespun Heart and fell absolutely in love with these beautiful garlands that Monica was making---The Names of Jesus Garlands. They were homemade, pretty and boasted the different names of God. I have always tried to find ways to decorate my home with the Word--especially at Christmas with decorations reflecting its true meaning as it is so easy to get caught up with the glamor of it all. I felt these garlands were a wonderful way to keep our hearts focused on God and can be displayed all year round to praise and glorify Him!

Monica makes two different garlands---one for Christmas and another for Easter. Now Monica is making these again and this time she is trying to raise money to attend The Relevant Conference, a Christian conference that is in 54 days. She is now at 78 of her goal of 100 made. Wow! I would really love to help get her there!

(Names of Jesus Easter Garland pictured here and above))

The best part of  all?

These gorgeous, Christ-exalting garlands are only ten dollars including shipping and handling!

You can't beat that! So would you please help me help sweet Monica reach her goal? You can order from her by clicking here, she is making a last call, so get yours while you can! These also make wonderful gifts for family and friends at such an affordable price. I just got mine in the mail--it is beautiful and I can't wait to display it!!!

Garland Description: Patterned papers are topped with names of Jesus and laminated. All circles are tied to a ribbon creating a wonderful garland praising the One we celebrate at Christmas! Nine circles in all saying: Oh, come, let us adore Him; Wonderful Counselor; Mighty God; Everlasting Father; Prince of Peace; Jesus; Emmanuel; Son of the Most High; Glory to God in the highest (some are different for the Easter garland). Garland measures approximately 60 inches in length and has loose ends to the ribbon so you can tie to the appropriate length.

Now we have a bit of a surprise for you---Monica has generously offered to giveaway one free garland of your choice (Easter or Christmas) to one of my readers--all you have to do is leave a comment WITH your email address! Yes, that's all!

She Delights Him

She brings him good, not harm all the days of her life. Proverbs 31:12

A lovely portrait of a true and noble wife:

"She delights him with her company and conversation,

sustains him with her strength,

stimulates and sharpens him with her wisdom and intelligence,

emboldens him with her praise,

bolsters him with her cheerfulness,

comforts him with her love,

and heartens him with her courage."

-The Botkin Sisters, Biblical Femininity

Charlie and Trike in the Grand Canyon Adventure Giveaway

Having a hard time finding books that are highly educational, fun and teach about God? Let me tell you about a great book I have found for children called Charlie and Trike in the Grand Canyon Adventure. Here's a little bit about it...

One adventurous monkey--Charlie.

One wise dinosaur--Trike.

Together they go on a wild adventure through the Grand Canyon.

They learn how the Grand Canyon came to be---through Noah's Flood and they find example after example of  overwhelming evidence all around him to prove it and along the track find themselves battling dangers such as wild snakes and dangerous waters. Charlie does his best to understand it all as Trike explains it all and the importance of trusting the Bible. He comes to a conclusion that will change his life forever.

This large, quality hardcover book for ages 4-8 that is written by Ken Ham (with Karen Hansel) of Answers In Genesis, takes a wonderful indepth look at the glories of God's Grand Canyon and is truly a wonderful addition to your child's library. Not just for the educational or God factor---but also because there is also a wonderful surprise in it. On the outside this looks like a regular book but on the inside there you find a wonderful array of notables:
  • informative mini books with crisp glossy images
  • fun fold up flap page
  • easy open flaps map
  • beautiful illustrations
  • cute eye-catching sketches
  • a fold out poster of Charlie and Trike to hang on your child's wall
  • envelope enclosed style message
This book reminds me of the fun lapbooks we love to create in our homeschool---only now we have it in long-lasting book form as the pages are highly durable and made to stand up to small children. What a treat!

Books that are wholesome, educational, fun and teach about the Bible are hard to come by--I highly recommend this new book to parents everywhere! You may view a video of the book here.

Now for some fun--we have four Charlie and Trike in the Grand Canyon books to give away to four lucky readers!!!

Yes, I said FOUR!

All you have to do to enter is leave a comment with your email!  Simple!       (U.S. recipients only)

    Witchcraft Aimed At Your Children

Have you been to your local books store lately? I have, and in the children's section the aisles of books are overflowing with witchcraft, vampires and the dead all targeted at our precious preteens and teenagers.

Why are books like these so popular? Because as the world grows more evil as fascination with things that are evil will abound.

Pastor Mark Driscoll shares his thoughts on popular titles such as Twilight, Eclipse, The Nacromancer, Spirit Bound, Dead Flame, The Sorceress, Hells Heroes, Spells and the many other popular witchcraft books sold on Amazon aimed at your children that you ABSOLUTELY MUST WATCH:

Parents, are you aware of what your children are reading?

    The Man Pleaser

Are you a pleaser of God or a pleaser of Man?

This question is on my mind often. I think about the actions that guide me through the course of my day and if in the end was it pleasing to God---or not. Man looks on the outside but the Lord checks our hearts.

We constantly need to check our motives:
Do we buy clothes/vehicles/homes/decorate with God in mind or to impress and keep up with our friends (even when we can't afford it)?

What about our families? Do we make choices for them based on pressures from other family members or well-intentioned friends, while suppressing that little voice in our heart, and knowing that is not what we would have really chosen to do?

What about when we are with friends? Are we afraid to say the truth sometimes? I know that there is a time to speak and a time to be silent---I am not talking about that. I am talking about sharing God's truth when He makes an opportunity available and not worrying what a person thinks about  you.

And how about when we blog?
Are we afraid that if we put up that certain video, or share that particular article that people won't like us, stop following/subscribing to us?

Do we choose things in our life because "everyone else is doing it" and not asking God where He stands on the issue?

I don't think Asa, Josiah or Gideon of the Bible were thinking about those things. They lived boldly for the Lord. Smashing and tearing down altars erected to false gods and building a new one in its place for the Lord.

"Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and burn their Asherah poles in the fire; cut down the idols of their gods and wipe out their names from those places." Deuteronomy 12:3

They had a spirit of boldness and courage. They were not thwarted nor influenced by pleasing man. That is how I want to live. Smashing and tearing down altars. I am not here to tickle anyone's ears and I do not have the least inkling to do so.
I will share truth here--even if it is hard for you to listen.

God has blessed me with a platform to women here and I must be faithful. I will not let Him down.
He has called me to the task,
pray that I would be found faithful.

Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God?
Or am I trying to please men?
If I were still trying to please men,
I would not be a servant of God.

    Galations 1:10

    A Lovely Summer Visit

A few weeks ago we were invited up to visit with the Brookshire's. Their mom~Robin, father~Rob, and daughters Breezy and Emily Rose (who sell their beautiful paper dolls at Vision Forum) warmly opened up their hearts and home to us in loving Christian hospitality. I wanted to share some of the pictures with you:

Sarah Mae of Like a Warm Cup of Coffee (and founder of Raising Homemakers) was visiting and she is a wonderfully friendly and gal and we 'clicked' right away! She is just what I thought she would be--kind, loving, exuberant, heart for the Lord and for Truth. It was a blessing to meet her, her husband and darling children!

The Devine family also joined us---so here we are--a second Raising Homemakers reunion! Now all you other gals who write for RH, we are going to have to plan to get you all down here somehow! Wouldn't it great to do so?

Sarah Mae's blog was recently featured on Good Morning America regarding how she made money by working at home through her Opensky shop. She is a wonderful example of how a young Christian mother can be industrious from home with her spare time and yet still balance family and homelife.

Sarah Mae has also recently helped to collaborate a wonderful piece of jewelry that is made by The Vintage Pearl. It is the"Raising Generations" necklace. She is also offering all my readers who are interested in buying this special necklace a discount of 15% for one week starting today until the 30th . The discount code is Generations15. Be sure to hop on over there and pick one up while you can!
    Look how pretty it is...

"Because I am raising generations I will never know...."

Doesn't that just resonate in your mind and heart?
I love jewelry with meaning--especially with a message so close to my heart!

Now back to my summer visit---
*Two generations here---mothers with their lovely daughters*

We also took some fun pics looking 'bitter and oppressed' but I laughed too hard when I looked through them and so therefore none made it in this post!
Besides, I might need to use them one day as blackmail pictures...JK!! ;)
     {suppressing evil laugh}

My daughters Janai and Nomi with Emily and Breezy. Emily was such a sweetie and shared her photography tips with Nomi who just loves the camera!

Here is my little Joy with Breezy, she just loves drawing and was so blessed to receive some drawing lessons from Breezy while we were there. Breezy is an amazing artist, you must take a peek at her beautiful work.

And last but not least----I was able to see the yo-yo quilt!!!! Have you not read about this quilt? This picture does not do it any justice. This beautiful quilt was done by Emily when she was only 16 and has over 1000 yo-yo's all handmade by one determined daughter! Read her inspiring story here.

All in all, it was a beautiful day full of fun, precious summer memories were made, and great Christian fellowship was had. Hopefully we will be able to do this sometime soon again!

Hope you enjoyed taking a peek into my summer!

    Industrious Daughters-Olde Angora Giveaway

I love hearing about how women are being industrious in their homes by helping to make money to help their families like we see modeled by the Proverbs 31 woman. I especially love when I get to hear stories of daughters who use the talents and gifts that God has given them to bless others with an entrepreneurial focus, I find it truly so inspiring!

I would like to introduce you to Olde Angora. Olde Angora is an Etsy shop started by a godly, homeschool daughter who loves to knit and crochet, and now she has started a shop to sell her wares. It reminds me of this verse in Proverbs 31:24--

"She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes."

Miss Miriam, owner of the shop, has a nice variety of quality hand-knitted items--she sells shawls, baby blankets, mini-quilts, hand crocheted bookmarks, scarves, slippers, hand spun yarn and headbands at very affordable prices. Many are hand-cleaned, hand-carded and hand-spun.  Here are a few pictures:

(Cute scarves, as pictured above, that can also be worn as a headband-$11)

    (Lovely baby blanket-$10)

Any one of these items would also make a wonderful gift for a birthday, Christmas or just because! Olde Angora has generously offered to one of my readers a $20 gift certificate to be used in her shop--- all you have to do is to enter is leave a comment WITH your email.

    For extra entries:

    The Gentle Mother

I love art that displays a mother being gentle with her children, beautiful motherhood touches lives around us in powerful ways and the influence runs deep.

I am always so inspired by gentle mothers that I see around me. Their gentle voices, their unnerving patience---all traits I so desire to greatly cultivate in myself. If we are to "love our children" the world around us should be able to validate Gods Word as true by being around us and seeing that our interaction with our children affirms that.

"Let your gentleness be evident to all." Phillipians 4:5

If we are to raise sons and daughters that will also love their children, it is imperative that it is modeled it for them. How many times have your caught yourself raising your voice to your children and have found them doing or saying exactly what you were doing later that day? They mimic all that we do, so from the minute we awake we must practice what I call 'purposeful parenting'. Everything we do they are absorbing and taking in like sponges. Our responsibility is to teach them to have self command and learn to heed the Word of God.

This is why I love watching 19 Children and Counting. Michelle and Jim Bob do their best to be patient with all of their 19 blessings when some of us struggle with just two!!! What a testimony and ministry they have given the world many times over of how the Lord can be central and His words active and true. I believe the Lord blesses them immensely because of their willingness to obey. Here is a clip of Michelle, who is ever so patient with all of her children--especially during her pregnancies and hardships---accepting the Mother of the Year award by Vision Forum. I know this has been circulating but still wanted to post this for others who haven't had a chance to see it. Her sweetness is a powerful reminder to all of us moms to emulate the meekness of Jesus and how it is beautiful is God's eye and to those who are watching:

    Courtship Questions for Potential Suitors

When a young man and woman begin a courtship there are many things to think about and questions that need to be answered. Stacy and James McDonald are graciously sharing a very thorough list of courtship questions they have personally used in their family. The list truly provides food for thought and even if you only used part of this list or created your own set of questions it is a wonderful starting point especially for those younger ones who are preparing for marriage and still formulating their thoughts on issues and to take a good hard look at their lives and see where they stand on issues:

(Click on the button to view them)

I am going to have my daughters sit down and look at these questions as I am sure it will make for a wonderful discussion time.

Vision Forum is also offering a new package helpful with this area:

Preparing Our Sons and Daughters Resource Pack

We own several of these resources and definitely would suggest this as a starting place for those who are going the courtship route.

It is so important to prepare our older children and so that
even the courtships of our sons and daughters bring glory God in heaven!

    Have a blessed day!

    The Joy of My Heart

    "Mommy...how do I become a Christian?"

Her little voice asked as she slowly walked inside the kitchen after carefully setting the table.

    I stopped.

    Years of teaching.

    Endless days of silent prayer.

    God gripped my heart.

This is what it is all about.

I put my arm around her.

We talk, I pray over her. We embrace.

    She is only seven.

And today she has eternal life with her heavenly Father.

Tears well up in my eyes.

    Thank you, Father.

    For my little Joy Noelle.

"Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

    The King That Dwells Within

Good homemaking is an admirable virtue

but often times it can be overdone.

If we are creating and building up a home

it should not just be a mere showplace to impress others.

A good husband appreciates homemaking efforts made for his sake

but wouldn't want it to take priority over him--

    or his children--

or the things he finds more important.

Woman would be wise to heed
    these simple words of advice:

The castle is not more important
than the king that dwells within.

That is why I am excited about Patriot's Club.

Their goal is "to help prevent the triumph of evil by helping parents raise a new generation of True American Patriots. Art-George Washington Crossing the Delaware by Emmanuel Lutze

    Gentleness of Voice

It’s not so much what you say
    As the manner in which you say it;
It’s not so much the language you use
    As the tone in which you convey it;
    “Come here!” I sharply said,
And the child cowered and wept.
    “Come here,” I said-
    He looked and smiled
And straight to my lap he crept.
Words may be mild and fair
    And the tone may pierce like a dart;
Words may be soft as the summer air
    But the tone may break my heart;
For words come from the mind
    Grow by study and art-
But tone leaps from the inner self
Revealing the state of the heart.
Whether you know it or not,
Whether you are mean or care,
    Gentleness, kindness, love and hate,
    Envy, anger, are there.
    Then, would you quarrels avoid
    And peace and love rejoice?

Keep anger not only out of your words-

Keep it out of your voice.

    True Charity

She extends her hand to the poor,
Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy.

    -Proverbs 31:20

One of the most beautiful attributes of the Proverbs 31 woman was her hands.

Beautiful because she didn't use them to serve herself.

Her hands were used as an instrument in God's hands to do his eternal, mighty Kingdom work here on earth.

In this fast paced consumerist generation, we've become too easily sidestracked serving our ownselfish desires and wanting 'needs.' We must remember that as Proverb 31 women that our calling if different---we must model true charity to those around us.

It is not enough to talk about it, but we must do it. Is there someone who needs a meal? A widow needs help? A shut in who needs a visitor? An unsaved relative who needs a phonecall or letter? A neighbor child who needs a friend?

As women we have the gift of being able to use our time to notice, help and serve those around us. It's those little things that get neglected when we aren't taking a good look around. A woman's first ministry to the Lord is always her husband and children first, and we have also been blessed with opportunities that knock outside our doors that we can be faithful in answering.

    Recently a reader wrote me:

"Would you consider doing any charity advertisement? My husband has been on layoff status for almost two years, so I could not possibly pay anything we are having a very hard time paying our current bills.

My Quilt Ministry is not a "profit" making ministry. We very seldom receive cash. Our donations are strictly cotton fabric, cotton batting, sewing machines and sewing notions and the generous help of a few Christian woman that make quilts for the children. We are currently looking for tables that have the ability to lower or rise (do to back problems of some of the women).

We make quilts for sick, less bless, abused, neglected and abandoned children. Our quilts are sent through out the U.S.A. and have gone as far as England. We have just completed making 125 quilts for our local Dept. of Social Services. What a joy it is knowing that a child in need will be receiving one of our quilts. All the glory goes to God!!!"

    A Mother's Influence

    Mothers, be faithful.

    Don't get discouraged.

Pray for your children, and do not forget to talk to them:
your words will settle down in their hearts.
They never can, they never will forget them.
    They may appear not to heed what you say;
they may put on an appearance of thoughtlessness and levity,
    which look as though your words were disregarded;

    but persevere---

those words are there, and never will be forgotten:
but may be called up in years to come when you are dead and gone,

and like seed cast in the earth, germinate and produce fruit

    that shall flourish in immortality.

    A Woman's Special Domain

The Kitchen: A Woman's Special Domain

While the home is a woman's greatest sphere of influence, the kitchen is her special area of dominion. It's here she specializes in hospitality, homemaker, and chef. This is the place that makes home a home with laughter around the table, little hands shaping cookie dough, and the floating aroma of freshly baked apple pies on a Saturday morning. Home just wouldn't be home without entering to see mother busy in the kitchen. Not only is this place the heart of her touch, but is her area of influence where she serves others her best.

The kitchen is a woman's ministry and where a keeper at home spends much of her time. While cooking for a husband and children might seem inglorious to some, this is a way a wife serves. It is most selfless when she rises before the rest to cook breakfast or bakes through the evening when she's exhausted from the day's work. And who doesn't appreciate when she thinks of the ones she loves and surprises them with a tasty treat? As she makes sure her family is well-fed (and on time!) she is serving them in a loving, and practical way.

With the joy of cooking and baking comes also the challenge of creating dishes that are both nutritious and savory. Being a wise steward of her money and taking care of God's temple is a challenge but possible with much effort. A wise woman will take on this task to ensure that her family is healthy and her husband's money goes a long way. As she fills her cabinets with her nutritious finds (Prov. 31:14), it is yet another way she serves her family and ministers for her Lord. Frugality in the kitchen is an art and a priceless asset to the home and family.

The kitchen is also a woman's headquarters for ministry and reaching out to other people around her. Whether it's a loaf of homemade bread to a hurting friend, a family over for dinner, a meal for a new mother, or counseling over a cup of tea---there's so much a woman can do for the glory of God in this corner of her home. The place where meals are made, hospitality thrives, and guest are able to feel at home. Whoever enters her doors, a woman has a glorious opportunity to encourage, disciple, counsel, and evangelize in the midst of her home and kitchen. This is one of her best areas of service and if she understands this, there's much she can do to touch other's lives.

Finally, the kitchen can be a center of family fellowship. Being not only the place where a woman creates and serves, the kitchen is also a daily meeting spot where she can enjoy her family and connect in a special way. The family table is the heart of fellowship, discussion, catching-up, camaraderie, family devotions, and friendship. At this one spot the family can daily unite and enjoy each other's presence and Mom's wonderful meals. But sharing memories is not just limited to the table; Preparing a meal with the children, conversations over cleaning dishes, or baking cookies with tiny tots are also times to share and bond and are special parts of family fellowship.

Whether she realizes it or not, a woman has a wonderful area of ministry in front of her. A woman of wisdom will look past the "seemingly simplicity" of her kitchen and will embrace the opportunities that are to be discovered. She will enjoy her femininity and the area that God gave her to serve others and will use it for the glory of God.

Because whether she is preparing a meal or sweeping the floor,
    she's ultimately serving Him
and to a woman who fears the Lord (Prov. 31:30)
    that's what truly matters.
